Lifetime License vs Annual Plan: When Does a WordPress Plugin Pay Off?

Lifetime license vs subscription is a question with a clear answer once you know one number: the month in which the annual plan would have cost more than the one-time price. This guide works that number out for all 47 deals in our catalog whose vendor also sells an annual plan, using the prices we checked on each vendor’s own site, and shows when a subscription is still the better choice.

How to calculate the payback period

The payback period is the number of months after which the annual plan would have cost more than the lifetime license. Divide the one-time price by the price of one year and multiply the result by 12. We round up to whole months, because in the month the two costs cross, lifetime has not quite paid off yet.

An example: Bricks Builder costs $599 once or $249 a year. Divide the first by the second, multiply by 12 and round up, and you get 29 months. Every month you keep using Bricks after that is a month you would otherwise have paid for. After five years, the difference adds up to $646.

  • Same vendor

    We only compare a lifetime license with the comparable annual plan of the same vendor. Prices from resellers or bundles are not part of the calculation.

  • No conversion

    Both prices stay in the vendor’s currency. The payback period is a ratio, so the currency does not change the result.

  • No annual plan, no figure

    If a vendor only sells lifetime licenses, or our data has no annual price, the deal gets no payback period instead of an estimate.

  • Checked prices

    Every price carries the date we last checked it on the vendor’s site. The most recent check was on Sep 15, 2026.

26 of the 47 deals pay for themselves within three years, and half of them within 35 months. Even the fastest deal needs 25 months. A lifetime license is therefore a bet that you will still use the plugin in two or three years, not a way to save money this year.

Fast payback: the quickest lifetime deals

These seven deals sit at the fast end of the ranking. LatePoint, WP ULike Pro and WPvivid Backup Pro pay for themselves after 25, 25 and 25 months. WP Adminify Pro follows with 27 months, Bricks Builder, Paymattic Pro and Bricksable Pro with 29, 29 and 29.

What they have in common is an annual plan that is expensive compared with the one-time price. WPvivid Backup Pro costs $99 once or $49 a year, LatePoint $199 once or $99 a year. The higher the yearly fee, the sooner a single payment is the cheaper option.

Slow payback, and why that is not always bad

At the other end of the ranking, the payback takes much longer. Spectra Pro needs 56 months, ZoloBlocks Pro and SureRank Pro 49 and 49. The OceanWP Pro Bundle takes 48 months, Stackable Premium 47 and HappyAddons Pro 46.

The reason is usually a low annual price. Stackable Premium costs $189 once or $49 a year, so it takes 47 months until lifetime is cheaper. A slow payback is not the same as a bad deal, though. It only means you need to use the plugin for longer. If you know you will, lifetime still comes out ahead: after five years, Spectra Pro has saved $26 and ZoloBlocks Pro $46 compared with renewing every year, and every further year adds the full annual price.

You can check any plugin in four steps, whether it is in our catalog or not. All you need is the vendor’s pricing page and an honest guess of how long you will use the tool.

When the annual plan is the better choice

Lifetime is not automatically the smarter buy. In these situations, a subscription is often the better deal:

  • You are still testing

    If you are not sure the plugin fits your workflow, a year of the annual plan or the free version costs less than a lifetime license you stop using.

  • The project is short

    A campaign site or a client project that only runs for a year or two will not reach the payback period of most deals.

  • The update promise is limited

    Bricksforge pays for itself after 39 months but guarantees updates for at least two years only. If the guarantee is shorter than the payback period, the math only works if development continues.

  • You need support beyond the first year

    Some lifetime licenses include support for a limited time only. Admin and Site Enhancements Pro includes one year, after which support is a paid plan.

  • Cash flow matters more

    A subscription spreads the cost over the years. If a large one-time payment would strain your budget, the annual plan keeps your options open.

It is worth it if you use the plugin for longer than its payback period. For the deals in our catalog, that period ranges from 25 to 56 months compared with the vendor’s annual plan. If you are unsure whether you will still use the plugin by then, the annual plan is the safer choice.

How do I calculate when a lifetime license pays off?

Divide the lifetime price by the price of the annual plan and multiply by 12. The result is the number of months after which the subscription would have cost more. Bricks Builder, for example, pays off after 29 months.

Is a lifetime license better than a subscription for agencies?

Often, if the license covers unlimited sites. Bricks Builder, Divi and MainWP Pro all do, so every new client site is covered without paying more. Check whether support covers only you or your clients as well.

What if a vendor has no annual plan?
